This book is about a 15 year old boy named John Smith which is his most recent chosen name in a life spent moving house every few months and constantly changing his identity.He is one of the nine Garde who came to Earth secretly after there home planet Lorien was destroyed by the Mogadorians. The Garde develop powers as they grow up and these powers are trained by a Cepan so that one day the Garde will fight the Mogadorians to take back their planet. However the Mogadorians are searching for the Garde to stop this from happening. The nine Garde are bound and charmed together in numbers the Mogadorians can only kill them in order. However when he has settled in Ohio, Paradise he starts to feel like a real teenager he falls in love with Sarah and does not want to leave. Danger is always searching for John. Number three had just died in a forest in Malaysia and John is next he is number four.
